rainy days produce drabbles...
So here I come with an angsty one. I don't know that it's all that good... I'm not so sure about the characterizations of these two in this piece, but I thought I'd share it anyway!
Drabble.
Adam/Brad.
G.
"I just... I'm really happy with it," Adam concludes fervently; he's spent the last fifteen minutes talking excitedly about his album. Adam gave Brad an advance copy of the album last week, which Brad's been listening to pretty much non-stop ever since.
Adam?" Brad says, hesitantly after a few minutes of relative silence.
Adam looks up from his salad attentively. "Mmm?"
Brad watches a kid at another table eat his spaghetti in an endearingly messy fashion for a few moments, and then asks, softly, "Can I ask you something?"
Adam looks confused. "Of course, Brad. Do you even have to ask?"
Brad shakes his head. Well, that bought Brad exactly two seconds. He sighs and just asks, quietly, "Are any of the songs on your album about me?"
Adam looks surprised at the question for four seconds (Brad doesn't count, though), and then he leans back against the vinyl seating of the booth they're seated at and asks, "You can't tell?"
Brad shrugs nervously, looking down at his order of fries to avoid Adam's piercing, observant gaze.
When he looks up, Adam's face is gentle as he softly speaks, "Sleepwalker's about you. Us."
Brad feels something in his chest tighten. He did know that (who else would it be about, really?), but it's nice to hear it from Adam.
"I didn't want to assume..." Brad says. "It's... it's a beautiful song, Adam."
Adam smiles in a way that always used to make Brad's heart pound (and kind of still does), and says simply, "I'm glad you like it."
Brad doesn't say what he's thinking, that he doesn't like it. It's a beautiful song, but like is not the word he'd use to describe how he feels about it. He can't bring himself to tell Adam how deeply the song resounds in him, how often he's listened to it -- over and over again, on repeat.
Brad sees the faraway look in Adam's eyes, and he swallows thickly. Then Adam says, really quiet, "If I Had You is about you, too."
Brad can't breathe. He just can't. His eyes swim with tears, and he says, faltering, "Adam..."
Adam smiles sadly. "It's okay, B. Someday it'll be about someone else, but..." he trails off, looking distant again.
Brad thinks about Adam's complicated life, thinks about how explosive their relationship was -- the sex and the fighting. He thinks about how hard it was to break it off, how hard it's been to watch Adam with Drake, how hard it is to sit across from Adam right now and know that if they honestly tried again, nothing would be different. Even if he wants to; wants it to be.
He absolutely doesn't say, "I don't want it to be about someone else, ever."
He just eats another fry and says, "It's a great album, Adam... so, so great."
His voice is almost back to normal.
