Got a Habs romance!

I'm not sure if I have very many - or any - hockey fans on my flist, but I need to flail about my hockey team, the Montreal Canadiens. Tomorrow night we're playing Game 7 against the Pittsburgh Penguins. If we win, I will of course be ecstatic.

But if we don't, I will not mourn (too long). I will not despair because I am fucking PROUD of my Habs. They have played this sport like the pro hockey players that they are.

Before the Penguins, we were up against the Washington Capitals, a team that was 1st in the Eastern Conference during the regular season -- and we were 8th! So let me tell you, no one - and I mean no one - thought we would win against the Caps, but we did! We fucking did!

And now we're about to play the do-or-die Game 7 after playing an epic game of hockey last night where we beat the Penguins 4-3. And many people say the odds are against us, that the Penguins are too good to lose again, that Sidney Crosby will wipe the floor with us. But fuck the odds! No one expected us to make it to the second round, let alone Game 7 of this series. But here we are! Against all odds, the Canadiens are playing tomorrow night in Pittsburgh, having already played some great hockey.

Win or lose tomorrow, I am PROUD to call myself a Habs fan.

GO HABS GO!!!

Oh, before I go I should introduce you to my future husband, PK Subban, one of the defencemen for the Canadiens. He was born in Toronto (like myself), he enjoys hockey (like myself), and he's only a year younger than me! And... well, just look at him:

LOL I LIVE IN PITTSBURGH AND I'M SORRY BUT THESE PEOPLE ARE FUCKING INSANE :D

ALSO CAN YOU EXPLAIN TO ME WHY 'CANADIENS' EVEN MAKES SENSE AS A TEAM NAME? I'M REALLY VEXED BY THIS OKAY

...Which people? I'm missing something...

Well, Montreal's a French city. I guess they could have been the Montreal Canadians (and many people call them both), but they went with the french alternative. Francais nationalisme, and all that. There's a lot of tension between some anglophone and francophone speakers. Some Quebecios people even want to separate from the rest of Canada. 'Cause they're stupid.

I don't know if that answers your questions even slightly. What are you vexed about exactly? I fear I've just given you a Quebec history session instead of explaining...

I just don't understand why they're called the Canadiens instead of like THE FIGHTIN' TIGERS or something

Fair enough! That's kind of a problem throughout the NHL. I mean, the Washington Capitals? I mean, I get it, but... really? Or the Edmonton Oilers, Vancouver Canucks, Boston Bruins, Toronto Maple Leafs, Philadelphia Flyers. I mean, even the Pittsburgh Penguins. I mean, at leats they're good on the ice, so it's kinda clever. But they're not the most ferocious of ice creatures.

The Montreal Polar Bears.

*shrug*

My friend's dad read out the list of European hockey team names, and that was pretty hysterical too. Team names are a little bizarre!
