A friend of mine let me borrow the complete series of Firefly. I've watched about half of it and I have a few things to say:
- The characters are so fleshed out and interesting. So often with television shows I either fall madly in love with one of the characters and the others don't really do anything for me. There might be a character I really dislike, but the most part I'll normally feel 'meh' about most of the characters in the show because I just don't find them that interesting. Like in, for example, House. I love Dr House and pretty much don't care for the other characters. Sure, I like Wilson and Cuddy, but as characters they're not really that intriguing to me. But I can honestly say that I just really like all the characters in Firefly pretty much equally. They all do and say things that make me cringe, swear, and laugh. There isn't one character I like more than the rest or one I dislike over another. I just feel that each characters is so layered and life-like that I can't justify obsessing over one or hating another. Instead, I'm just fascinated by all of them. Sure, Jayne does some fairly idiotic things, but one can see why he does them even if one doesn't agree with them. And yeah, Mal is all kinds of awesome, but he has his faults too and rather than dismissing them, they add a wonderful element to his character. I just think that they're all properly flawed characters that I can't help but like no matter what. And that's a really cool and unique aspect of the show.
- My DVD player is being a huge bitch. It'll freeze in the middle of a great scene (like when Simon and Kaylee are having a 'moment', or when Jayne's about to kill an Alliance member) and then I have to turn the machine off, start it again and find the scene I was watching. Gets kind of annoying after the first ten times. At first I wondered if it was the DVDs, but then I checked a movie and the same thing was happening. And when the machine starts up it sounds like - if it were alive - it could roll over, retch its insides out, and die at any moment. I think I've figured out what happened, though, because it wasn't doing that when I first started my Firefly marathon. The person I borrowed the series from put stickers with her initials on each individual DVD and plastic encasing (I guess, in case someone finds it, they'll know the person who owns it has an M and an A as their initials???) and I'm pretty sure one of the stickers came off (there's one missing!) and lodged itself in the player's innards. I have no idea how to fix it, so I've just abandoned it for the moment. Unfortunately, that means I haven't quite finished watching the episodes (and would really like to) so it'll have to wait.
- WHY do all the best television shows get canceled? The other day I watched some episodes of How I Met Your Mother and I can't wait to watch the rest, and I'm incredibly sad that the show's not on anymore. Now I'm watching Firefly and it's the same fucking deal: I mean, this show's so smart and witty and creative, and it's such a damn shame that only 14 episodes exist! It makes me really angry when shows like Real Beauty and ER get airtime instead.
- And finally, the fanfic is going to be awesome.
Dammit, I have to go to work now. BUT The Daily Show's on tonight and tomorrow I'm going to watch the most recent episode of Psych, so all is not lost.
