really grinds my gears...
Nov. 21st, 2010 08:01 pmI've been watching Glee lately for its recent addition of Darren Criss (of A Very Potter Musical) to its cast. The last few episodes have been dealing with bullying and homophobia in a more head-on manner, and I'm glad they are doing this.
This one bully keeps shoving Kurt into lockers and calling him 'homo' and the like. This usually happens in crowded hallways and cafeterias, and yet no one around them says or does a damn thing.
Is this something that actually happens in high schools in America? Are gay people openly bashed and bullied in hallways?
I went to high school of about 500 people in a small suburb in Quebec. The school was a shitbox in many ways; my high school years fucking sucked. PI was mocked by some of classmates, and there were some people who were picked on mercilessly, but there was never any of this shoving people into lockers or calling them names outside of class.
If I had ever witnessed something like that, violence against someone because of their sexuality, I'd have fucking gone after them. I would've given that little fuckass a piece of my goddamn mind; I'd have ripped him a new one. I would've have gotten all my friends, we'd have gotten the word out to the rest of my classmates, and I'd have told as many faculty members as possible. I would have done everything in my power to get that kid expelled. And I would have made friends with that gay kid.
I just don't get how people can stand around and watch this shit happen. My school was no sanctuary, but the one out gay kid in the entire school was never publicly humiliated or bullied. I couldn't tell you what his experiences were like in less public spaces, but if anyone had gone after him the way people go after Kurt on Glee, that would be the end of their reign of popularity. That tough-guy act would not have lasted long.
This is also true of the way Artie was treated in the pilot of Glee. If anyone had even touched one of the students who used a wheelchair, or a student with another form of disability, the asshole would have been vilified, no matter what rung they held in the social ladder. Not a fucking chance.
Innocent bystanders are not innocent if they stand by and let bullying happen.
