rockinhamburger: (Gorgeous Gaga)

Lady Gaga's a polarizing performer. People either love her or hate her, and then there are the people who are fairly indifferent, but for the most part she creates very strong feelings in a general audience. I find it fascinating, and a little disheartening.

I was all ready to despise Gaga. I heard Pokerface one day in a restaurant and literally went, "Who the hell is this?" I judged her then and there because, hey, it was pop music, and if there's anything I'm quick and happy to judge, it's pop music.

But then someone showed me a clip of Gaga performing a stripped-down version where it was just her and her piano, and I was left saying, "Well, she's got pipes, but you wouldn't know it from the music she's got playing on the radio right now."

Within a few months, I began to slowly warm up to her. I heard Paparazzi and fell in grudging love with it, and then I saw her a stripped-down performance of the song and loved it even more. Before long, I had to admit to myself that I was starting to become a fan.

Her Bad Romance video was the tipping point. At the end of that, I just sat there going, "Is this really it? Is someone actually doing this? Tiptoeing on to the music scene with the tried and true pop star mold only to turn around and put out songs and music videos of actual substance with valuable ideas and messages, instead of the tired love-and-sex model for hit songs?"

And it's pretty clear by now that's exactly what she did. She studied the industry to find out exactly how to be successful so that she could then put out the messages she's actually interested in sharing with the world.

A message of acceptance and inclusion; a message about the birth of a new generation of people who refuse to persecute others based on how we differ, but rather to celebrate those differences and come together as a supportive, loving community of diversity.

Whatever you think about Gaga, you cannot deny that that is a fucking beautiful message. And in a time and place where a lot of pop music is about superficiality, it is a breath of fresh air to see someone who is genuinely authentic about humanitarian issues.

You don't have to like her music, but the fact that I like it is not a fucking crime. I am allowed to love Lady Gaga, and her music, and her performances, just as you are allowed to dislike them. Just say that, though: "I don't like Lady Gaga's music." Don't say, "Her music is shit. She's stupid and unoriginal and gimmicky." The message you're sending there is that I like shitty music, that I am foolish for liking someone who is, apparently, stupid, unoriginal and gimmicky in how she presents her music. And that's just rude. Dislike her performance style and music, but leave the cattiness at home, okay?

Music is personal. There are people out there who love the music you hate, and they're allowed to. There are people out there who hate the music you love, and they're allowed to as well.

But music is wonderful because it can unite people. It can lift us up and give us courage and conviction. It can be a refuge, our very best friend when we feel like we can't go on. And because music is all that and more, I think it's worth at least trying to be respectful of others' tastes, no matter how they differ from our own.

Essentially, we shouldn't have to feel ashamed of the music we love.

OMG WORD. THIS. SO MUCH THIS. I am so fucking beyond tired of defending myself for liking her. Just, enough already.

Seriously, I'm so tired of it, too. And now that she's so infamous, she literally can't do anything right, and when people criticize I'm just at a loss for words that aren't, "Well, fuck you, then."

BUT SPEAKING OF GAGA, have you heard the Born This Way album? I just listened to it for the first time last night, and I feel like I went through a religious experience. I feel like I entered the Church of Gaga, and came out feeling worshiped and loved and completely loving and capable and strong as a result. And that's just from the first listen. It's going to take months of listening to really get the full benefit, and I'm just starry-eyed from the possibilities.

Sometimes I desperately wish this woman had been here when I was in high school. Would've saved me so much doubt and insecurity and self-shame, or at least made me feel less alone in that.

Fuck I love her so much.

I know; what really, really disturbs me is how much hate for her I see on sites like Jezebel and Autostraddle. I'm like, guys. She's a bisexual feminist and one of the most powerful people in the world. Not to mention that she's one of the only - maybe even the only - celebrity who puts forth dedicated efforts for LGBT causes - and provides a message of self-empowerment for her young gay fans. Where the fuck is all this hate coming from? My God. But no, you see the same kind of shit there that you see everywhere else - blah blah blah, arrogant, she doesn't speak for me, annoying, overexposed. When the first single came out, Autostraddle ripped her a new one for her use of "chola" and "Orient," not to mention what they saw as insensitivity towards transgender people in the term "born this way," regardless of the fact that she wasn't actually talking about a physical birth. It was disturbing and scary and incredibly stupid.

But. The album. YESSSSSS. Since I pre-ordered the special edition on her website, I didn't feel too guilty about downloading the leaked copy and listening to it. It's. I don't even know. It's like a party for my ears. AND IT'S SO 80S! Only like, updated-80s.

Hair and Schiesse are definitely my favorites, oh my God. Hair is the SONG OF MY HEART. And Schiesse is amazing - "I wish I could be strong without permission"? AHHH. YES. I love Government Hooker, too, holy shit. It's such a bold, in-your-face comment about the nature of celebrity and femininity in America.

And AMERICANO. Ahhh, yes. Yes, yes yes. That's basically my review: yes.

THIS SO HARD. It's funny that I read this NOW, because I'm listening to her as we speak.

Paparazzi was the song that got me into Gaga too, I heard the full version one day (before that I'd only heard other people sing it), and something about the beat of it and the sound quality just resonated in me, literally. It was... wow. Also I have a friend who adores her and she managed to convince me to stop being so elitist and just enjoy it XD She showed me one of her b-sides, Vanity, and I was completely hooked.

People give her a lot of crap, say she's fake and everything- and that's cool if people think that, but I think they're missing the POINT. The point isn't where she came from or whether all her stories are true, but the message she promotes and how she promotes it, the effect it has on people. She uses her fashion, her music, her concerts, all of it, as a vector to convey that message of acceptance you talked about.

I watched an amazing interview with her this morning, it was called Inside the Outside. Really, really interesting stuff. <3
